Traditional Craft on Mull

Here at Distaff and Loom we love to share our knowledge about the traditional crafts of spinning and weaving. Situated on the picturesque Isle of Mull, we offer bespoke craft activities and experiences. Mull is famous for its stunning untouched scenery and an abundance of wildlife, this does mean however that most activities on the island are geared to the outdoors.
However, not everyone can be outdoors all day – especially when the weather turns a bit wet. We aim to offer beginner friendly craft experiences that would brighten any rainy day. Who needs to go out, when you can stay in with some wonderful fibre to craft? Plus nearly every window on Mull has an amazing view!
Spinning and Weaving
Distaff and Loom is a tale of two loves: spinning and weaving. We currently offer bespoke beginner friendly spinning experiences. Weaving is a bit harder to teach in a small amount of time in a meaningful way, so is just currently an online project to showcase my weaving journey. See below for more information on spinning and weaving.

Handweaving
I’ve been weaving for 15 years on a 12 shaft floor loom. A couple of years ago I was lucky enough to get an antique George Wood 16 shaft Dobby Loom to add to my loom collection. It is my dream to bring about a revival of historic linen weaving in Scotland – read about my trials and triumphs here.
