You will learn on your very own Kromski Fantasia spinning wheel. Custom painted with signature Distaff and Loom colours; the pale blue and powder blue are reminiscent of the sea and sky on the Isle of Mull. The Fantasia is a beautiful modern sleek wheel that is designed with the beginner in mind; light to treadle, and easy bobbin changes mean you can focus on just learning to spin.

You can choose between spinning wool, or plant based fibres (suitable for vegans).

Wool Fibre Selection

The Wooly Fibre Basket will contain a selection of regionally appropriate fibres in a range of natural colours and tones from browns and blacks to greys and white. Hebridean, Shetland and even Icelandic.

Plant Based Fibre Selection

The Plant Based Fibre Basket will contain an unusual mix of cellulose based fibres suitable for vegans. From the very ancient flax and nettle, to the more modern fibres such as Seacell or Tencel – these fibres come in natural or white tones.

Sit back and relax – your spinning experience will come to you. Whether its your home, holiday home or motorhome – chose a time and date that fits around your plans. We will just need two chairs that you find comfortable.

All Fantasia’s come with an exclusive to Kromski rare earth magnet flyer system, poly drive band, Scotch tension, three bobbins and onboard lazy kate, threading hook and oil.

What could be a better holiday memento than taking home a new craft? An unfinished wheel needs you to apply a varnish/oil/colour. Distaff and Loom only sell wheels in person to ensure a spinning wheel match made in heaven.

Will I actually be able to make some yarn?

Of course! However, learning to spin is a bit like learning to drive – it takes a lot of practice. The yarn you make in the 2 hours isn’t going to be perfect – but the time you spend making it will be. Be patient and kind to yourself and enjoy the learning journey. You will go away with knowledge to keep practicing so that in time you will be spinning beautiful yarn.

I am a knitter/crocheter/weaver will I be able to use my handspun in my projects?

Using your own handspun in projects is just the best feeling ever – and one of the main reasons why spinners spin (I am a weaver who spins). However, you will need to practice before you are able to make yarn you are happy with in your projects (see FAQ above). This is a beginners experience – the yarn you make in your 2 hours will be labelled ‘my first yarn’ – you can keep it in your yarn stash as a reminder of how far you have come on your spinning journey.

Is Spinning for Everyone? I have a medical condition or specific learning requirement, can I still have a go?

Distaff and Loom want to make spinning accessible to everyone, regardless of their age, gender, health or learning requirements. Spinning as a hobby has so many benefits to boost your wellbeing – but primarily as a stress free time for yourself where you get to squish some lovely fibre! Spinning is a fairly low impact activity where you can start and stop when you want – but you will need to be able to gently work the treadles with your feet. Please contact me should you need to discuss your requirements in confidence.

Do you offer a group discount?

There is 38% discount on a second booking. I like to limit Spinning Wheel Experiences to two people to ensure quality spinning time.
