Learn to spin on a beautiful Kromski Drop Spindle in a colour or finish of your choice, with the option to buy a spindle at the end of the session if you enjoy it. Find out about different spindle types from around the world, and a few interesting spindle facts from history. Choose from a wooly fibre selection or plant based fibres suitable for vegans.

Wool Fibre Selection

A selection of regionally appropriate fibres in a range of colours and tones – from browns and blacks to greys and whites. Expect some Hebridean, Shetland and Icelandic.

Plant Based Fibre Selection

A selection of plant based fibres suitable for vegan spinners. From the ancient flax and nettle to the modern Seacell or Tencel – these fibres are all natural or white tones.

Do I get to keep my drop spindle?

The Distaff and Loom Drop Spindle experience is conducted with demo drop spindles. If you find that you enjoy drop spindle spinning you can buy a new Kromski drop spindle for £15 at the end of the session – I will bring along all varieties for you to chose on the day.

Do I have to stand up, or can I sit down whilst learning to drop spindle?

You can do whatever feels comfortable. The beauty of drop spindles is that you can spin standing up and even walking about (with practice), but you don’t have to. Learning to drop spindle sitting down can seem less daunting for new learners, and is great for when you want to spin on the bus/ferry/waiting room etc

Is Drop Spindle Spinning for Everyone? I have a condition or specific learning requirement – can I still give it a go?

At Distaff and Loom we want to make spinning accessible (both wheel and drop spindle) to as many people as possible. There is a great feel good factor in spending some quality time with some nice fibre and simple tools to create some yarn. Drop spindle spinning is a fairly low impact activity – you can start and stop whenever you want. You can spin sitting down, but you will need to be able to gently raise your arms to about shoulder height.
