Why Distaff and Loom?

I thought I’d do a quick post on why I thought I’d call my business Distaff and Loom.

Simply put, spinning and weaving are at the very core of my being; they are such creative and restorative crafts that I want to share with you all. Flax and Linen have a special fascination for me – to spin and to weave. Flax is our native cellulose fibre, but sorely forgotten and underrated. In order to spin long line flax stricks you need to dress them on a distaff. Hence Distaff and Loom!

My Father very cleverly made the Distaff and Loom logo. To the left are three common bobbins that I use to spin and weave with. The largest bobbin in the middle everyone should recognise as a spinning wheel bobbin, the smaller bobbin on the left (technically called a pirn) is from my Dobby loom, and the flanged bobbin on the right is from my floor loom.

The signature four colours that make up the Distaff and Loom logo are pale blue, light powder blue, purple and green. These colours were chosen to represent the landscapes and scenery on the Isle of Mull where Distaff and Loom is based.

‘The sea, the sky, the heather on the hills, the woods and mountains beyond…’

All Distaff and Loom Kromski spinning wheels are painted in one of these four lovely colours to brighten your day when you book a spinning experience.
